Restrictions and Policies for Rowan University Housing.
Nov 13 2023 UncategorizedRowan University Housing Policy
Rowan University offers a variety of residence halls and apartment communities located on a scenic campus in Glassboro. Students living on-campus are required to have a residential contract.
Staff members conduct inspections of the buildings and stairwells on a regular basis. They knock and announce themselves before entering. They are looking for prohibited items and unsafe conditions that violate policy.
Prohibited Items
Residents must keep their apartment or room locked when they are away from home. Failure to do so may result in a lock change charge for the cost of labor and materials required to change locks. Students must also leave one dresser, desk or wardrobe empty for future residents to use. Flammable liquids, gases, paint thinner and similar combustible items are not permitted in housing. Students are not allowed to possess weapons or other dangerous objects in their residence hall rooms or apartments and may be charged with possession of these items.
In order to ensure that all spaces are safe and sanitary, staff members conduct visual inspections of each resident’s space. They will knock, announce themselves and key in to complete these inspections. Students do not need to be present for these inspections, but they should make sure their doors are locked and all personal property is secure.
Only postings directly related to University programs and/or services or sponsored by officially affiliated organizations are permitted in housing facilities. Nails, screws and double-sided tape are not permitted for posting purposes due to their potential to damage paint and drywall.
Gender Inclusive Assignments
Gender and sex-based room assignments can impose living situations that feel unsafe for students who identify as transgender or do not identify within a gender binary. Additionally, restrictive living situations can also make students a target of bias and discrimination. The University is committed to providing safe and comfortable living environments for all students, including those who identify as a member of a gender that differs from the one assigned at birth.
Students who participate in the Gender Inclusive Housing option will have the opportunity to select rooms with a roommate of any gender. This option will be available in all apartment buildings and Holly Pointe Commons residence hall. Bathrooms will be designated prior to Housing Selection and will be made available to students in accordance with their preference.
This option is on an opt-in basis and students must indicate their interest in the Gender Inclusive Housing option during the housing application process. Roommate groups must also agree to this choice by marking the answer as “yes” in question 22 of the online application.
Cancellation Policy
All students who live on campus are required to participate in University Housing. Students who wish to seek an exemption or modification of this requirement must submit a Student Housing Contract Release Request with the required documentation. Students wishing to be released from their housing contract due to a medical or disability-related need should contact the Office of Accessibility Services for guidance through the accommodation process.
The incident sparked protests at the university, where Black students make up 10% of the student population. The Gloucester County prosecutor’s office decided not to upgrade the charge against Willis and D’Agostino, who were charged with simple trespassing.
All traditional campus residence halls close for winter break after the last day of final exams. Residents who are not returning to their space for spring semester must complete the advertised check-out process and return their keys or fobs. Failure to do so will result in the University assessing charges based on the actual labor and materials needed to change necessary locks.
Room Selection
Rowan University promotes a vibrant community that values diverse identities, fosters a respect for individuals and their differences and encourages students to interact across intersections of identity. This policy applies to all members of the Rowan University community, including students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Students apply for housing and select a room assignment through the online application process in the spring semester. Detailed information about the application and room selection process is sent to students via their Rowan email accounts.
Class standing for the room selection process is determined by the student’s total number of credits earned, with students having 0-57 credit considered “freshmen” and those with 58-89 credits being considered “sophmores”. Students in groups that are matched by class standing receive appointment times during their respective classes during the room selection process.
Students who wish to live off campus are required to file for a housing waiver found in “My Housing” under the Student Tab on Banner Self-service. This process will require students to provide proof of residence within a 40-mile radius of Rowan, and a notarized statement indicating they intend to commute each academic year.
